The troops arrived in good spirits ahead of a 8th and 9th place showdown at the newly laid Eastbourne hockey club Pitch. With only 12 players Marlow knew today wouldn't be easy and they had to be intelligent and sensible in their decision making for 70 minutes.
Fans favourite and Marlow celebrity who recently turned on the towns Christmas lights, Larry Pirlo Lovejoy started brightly controlling the middle of pitch with his partner in crime Gary Goodman alongside future star Imre Geritts, Continually linking up the defensive and attacking lines, creating chances for Land Brothers.
Playing alongside the experienced and leader of Jon Hooker the young Nick Winter showed fantastic professionalism and ability to keep Eastbourne's forwards in his back pocket, Big Bird in goal was refreshed after a short break back to his homeland, this showed making some super saves and frustrating the Eastbourne team and the on watching spectators.
On serval occasions both teams wondered if the umpires were watching the game or organising their retirement beside the seaside in one of many Eastbourne's retirement homes, making some incredible decisions. Sam North, Hooker and Chris Land certainly agreed with this, both receiving a little sit down off the pitch for periods of the game.
Half time arrived, a welcomed rest for the Red Army. As always....inspiring and motivating words from Coach Chappell along with the senior pros in the side. The message was to stay on task and the chances will come.
Chances came for both sides but the game finished goalless after an end to end battle, Marlow continue on their travels next week to 3rd place Banbury for what could be a fabulous contest of hockey. Inspector Gadget with his iPad and statistic apps, Manager Joe Glesson was slightly upset and disappointed after the game not to make his Marlow 1st team debut after binging his kit but the time will come, If you believe you will achieve.
A special mention to Sam North who has potentially earned himself place in the club record books.... for the number of cards received. Speaking to the press after the game he said I'm not proud but if I'm honest I think they're just gingerist.
