Today, was our final game of the season against Wycombe 6’s. With three wins against the team already we went in confident but wary; we knew they weren’t to be under-estimated. Having used a different goalkeeper each game so far, we could’ve been up against anything.
The game started off well and evenly matched. Wycombe had some power behind their hits, but Marlow supplied agility and speed. Despite possessing the ability to get around the Wycombe players, it became apparent very quickly that their goalie was good. She knew how to make her presence felt and was successful in covering her goal. Marlow had some good opportunities in the first half, utilising space and making runs down either side of the pitch, but to no avail. No goals, just a resounding *thunk* as the ball hit the goalkeeper’s pads. Multiple times. Frustrating!!!
Marlow weren’t to be swayed though. The pressure was on and we dealt with that, by applying it to the Wycombe team with numerous short corners. We had a fair few of these and we did not hold back, with Emma, Anna and even Mac bringing out some forceful hits. However, no goals, yet.
The first half finished 0-0 and following a team chat we went into the second with renewed vigour. Our attack continued and we had a beautiful breakthrough when Caitlin ran the ball to the top of the D, took it in and with a calm, swift hit the ball went to the back of the goal. At last. The cheers resonated throughout the pitch and from the sidelines; 1-0 to Marlow.
With that goal Marlow finally found their stride and rhythm. The ball continued to inhabit Wycombe’s D, and with a trusty slap from Emma the ball hit the back of the goal again. 2-0 to Marlow.
Our third, and final, goal of the game was earned by the skin of our teeth. Marlow’s attack on the goal continued, but Wycombe put up a strong fight. It was tough. The ball was skittering around by the goal line, with Marlow and Wycombe players alike desperately trying to gain control. A touch from Sarah saw the ball go over the goal line and be quickly pushed back by a Wycombe defender. The moment was fleeting, and unseen by most, but it was enough; the Umpire saw and with a blow of the whistle Marlow were 3-0 up, a result that was met at the time with stunned, confused silence from all.
The game ended with a sigh of relief, and a feeling of insurmountable happiness. With this win Marlow 6’s promotion was secured. Player of the Match this game is shared by Caitlin and Aimee. But the win, and the victory of promotion, is a prize earnt and shared by the whole team. Well done Ladies!
