Finishing with a flourish!

Finishing with a flourish!

U16As show their class

Marlow U16As finished their season with a game that reflected their season - fantastic first half and then tailing off towards the end but with a final flourish. In the first half against local rivals Maidenhead Marlow were determined not to be out done and showed their desire with hard tackles, working hard for each other and being first to the loose ball. Their tenacity paid off as after just 5min, Anya Swales showed great skill to roll round and slot the ball home. This marked the start of a sustained period of pressure with great approach play from Holly BF, Hannah Peperell and Hannah Gilmour giving opportunities to the Marlow forwards. Ella Tidy took advantage with 2 goals either side of a goal from Amy Dring. All the goals were the result of some excellent teamwork and great passing with the girls showing just how well they can play.

As the half went on Maidenhead found their feet a little more and put together a more positive passage of play, winning a series of short corners which were well-defended by Marlow's GK Alys Ramm, Alex Lane and Grace Harding. Indeed Marlow were able to turn quickly from defence to attack as a successful defence of a corner led to a fabulous run down the right wing from Ella Brown who then won Marlow their own penalty corner just prior to the interval which Josie Nash fired in.

5-0 up at half-time and not feeling under pressure, Marlow eased off the accelerator in the second half. This coincided with an improvement from Maidenhead and as the home team's work rate improved Marlow's concentration dropped. Maidenhead took their chances with 3 goals in quick succession as the Marlow defence failed to clear their lines despite numerous opportunities.

Marlow's players gathered themselves and were able to exert a measure of control again with Millie Jackson playing a particularly crucial part in both preventing Maidenhead attacks down the right as well as setting up excellent attacking options. Her no-nonsense approach produced some great early passes to enable Marlow to take the game to Maidenhead. One such pass saw the opportunity open up for Hannah Peperell who slammed the ball home from the top of the D.

A 6-3 win with much of the game played with great style and panache it bodes well for next year as only 7 of the current squad of 19 will be moving out of the age group next year.
