The first league game was at home for Marlow against West Hampstead in Division 2 of Men’s South Hockey League. A bright start for Marlow with a short corner given in the opening 10 minutes, which was saved by the keeper from the straight strike but was put away on the next attempt by Jason Lee.
West Hampstead levelled the score before half time from a right hand lay in a short corner and was hit into the net. The rest of the first half passed with big saves from both keepers. With West Hampstead applying most of the pressure, but the Marlow defensive effort was good enough to keep them out.
The sides took settler in the shade during half time with the game levelled at 1-1.
The second half scoring was opened by West Hampstead from a reverse shot from a tight angle. During the period of pressure following the goal in the second half by the West Hampstead forwards, Marlow’s keeper made some crucial saves to keep the boys in the game. The fourth goal of the game was scored by West Hampstead and put the visitors 2 goals ahead.
The latter stages of the second half was all Marlow. The midfield and forward lines pressing the ball and winning it back high up the field. The final 10 minutes saw Marlow go very close multiple times and big calls for penalty corners but the score line remained the same. The game ended 3-1 to West Hampstead.
