The Christmas advent calendar may have come crashing down on Saturday, but Marlow's title challenge remained in one piece with a convincing thrashing of Bracknell at Pound Lane. An exceptionally strong start had the points in the bag well before half time. With Jack Kelly owning the centre of midfield, Harri Ravenscroft marauding forward from the back and Ben Horan creating havoc on the right, it just needed someone to add the finishing touch. That someone was on each of 4 first half occasions the division 4 topscorer Rex Walls.
2 short corners and 2 open play goals, all finished with power and accuracy. It could have been more, Dave Lambeth hitting a post and the Bracknell keeper stopping a number of other chances. Walls even had time for a rest before half time, picking up a yellow card for retaliating to some aggresive defensive attention and handing out his own Chrostmas punch to his marker.
Marlow just had to close out the game in the second half, and when Jack Kelly slammed in number 5 it was time to get the party hats on and crack open the advocaat. Rob Postings twice ran through the entire Bracknell defence only to see his final shot blocked, before Walls added his 5th and Marlow's 6th.
Bracknell showed they were a more than capable, and as soon as Marlow eased up they attacked and fired in a couple of consolation goals, the first of which was easily the goal of the game, rifled into the roof of the net from a narrow angle.
6-2 it ended, half way through the league campaign and Marlow lead by 4 points, with a real opportunity of an unbeaten season. Merry Christmas one and all!
