Marlow Men’s 2s bounced back from 3 straight defeats by beating Sonning in a tense affair at Pound Lane .
The early exchanges were predictably tight, with both sides trying not to concede early. The game did eventually open up with both sides creating chances that ultimately went without being converted. Even skipper Neel Sood found himself in the opposition circle at one point, managing to avoid the habitual nose bleed and forcing a short corner. Sonning had their chances too, but half time came with the game goalless.
Coaches Ward and Porter emphasised patience to their players during the half time break; their words rang true 2 minutes into the half, a sweeping move from defence to attack led Ali Dalton slamming home from 5 yards out. The perfect start to the second half for the hosts. The goal gave the game a little edge, as Sonning gradually became more and more attacking, while also having to defend as Marlow used the counter attack effectively; a volte-face in proceedings if ever it was seen.
As the second half became more frantic, the hosts were reduced to 10 men, as Elliot Killington was given a yellow card for a professional foul. Young Elliot is clearly relishing his new-found role as the side’s midfield enforcer, but unfortunately the umpires did not agree with his approach on this occasion. Sonning imposed themselves during this period with a player extra, attacking intently; only to be thwarted by the resolute Marlow defence, led by GK Ross Bone (and with the aid of a couple of disallowed goals!).
Pound Lane erupted in unbridled joy at the final whistle, with the players especially glad to have gained points on the board. A clean sheet and no short corners conceded were two stats that were most pleasing. Onwards and upwards to play PHC Chiswick at home next week – all support welcome.
Special mention to MOM Harri Ravenscroft, with skipper Neel Sood taking the DOD honours for forgetting his match shirt and having to be bailed out by a confused junior (thanks Ben!).
