Marlow men's 2's are now currently sitting in 10th position in Regional MBBO league 1 having lost last Saturdays match v Eastcote 1's 6-0. The good news is that they have now played all three of the top placed teams! Eastcote, like Oxford the week before, were a well drilled side with clear ambitions to gain promotion. Right form the start they dominated possession and attacked the Marlow defence in waves creating numerous chances with incisive play and movement off the ball. They were 3 nil up at half time with Marlow only having a small percentage of possession and unable to support the ball carriers making rare forays into the Eastcote half.
The second half continued in much the same vein, but Marlow did increase their work rate and and made it more difficult for the Eastcote side to break them down. As the players tired and the game became more open it was inevitable that gaps would appear and the final scoreline was 6-0 to Eastcote which was fair result. Marlow did have an opportunity to get a consolation goal late in the game with Elliot Killington making a fine run from inside his own half and past many Eastcote players before slipping the ball to Rob Gerrits who had his shot smothered by the Eastcote keeper.
This was another harsh lesson for this developing Marlow side, but they continue to play with defiance and resilience and special credit should go to the numerous U16/U18 players in the squad who admirably stuck to their tasks and are learning each week. The back four also had a fine game and prevented Eastcote from scoring on many occasions with goal keeper Ross Bone also making some great saves and having the personal satisfaction of saving a penalty flick in the second half.
Alan Hanson was famously quoted as saying 'you can't win anything with kids', and was proved wrong so watch this space as Marlow men's 2's look to start putting points on the table in the next 4 weeks.
