After coming through their first two league matches without a loss, Marlow were keen to push on and make it three. A focused and high energy warm-up as well as an abundance of coaching staff and subs meant Marlow looked ready to seize the three points.
Sadly for the visitors the first half did not go their way. During the half Marlow did have some attacking opportunities down the sides through man of the match Elliot Killington and Trevor Jackson. However inaccurate five yard passing and some questionable first touches really prevented Marlow from getting into the game in an attacking way and by the end of the half Oxford had converted almost all of their breakaway attacking opportunities to make it 4-0.
At the half time break it may have been easy to become despondent with the score line, but to their credit every single player came back out and made the second half a far more competitive affair. The first of Marlow’s goals in the second half came from a well worked short corner which was finished off by joint top goal scorer, and defender, Nick Winter. Marlow then converted a second opportunity with some fast, accurate passing which led Chris Hulse to find Oli Wakeman on the post for a slap past the goalie. Shortly after this however Oxford countered to make the score 5-2.
The next passage of play was dominated by the mid-half entertainment of Chris Hulse running shuttles between the Oxford defenders as they tried to wind down the clock. Marlow had several more attacking opportunities but sadly due to a horrendous pass back, Marlow were left overloaded at the back and Oxford sealed the 6-2 victory.
The second half was far stronger for Marlow and can take away a 100% corner conversion rate, both defensively and attacking.
Lots to be positive about and lots to learn ahead of the big game against Wycombe next Saturday.
