Match Report weekly roundup Weekend 10th/11th October

Men's results

The men's 1st team beat Amersham and Chalfont 5-1 at home. Marlow were in buoyant mood after winning their opening two games. Birthday boy Chris Sewell opened the scoring after 90 seconds and that set the tone for the majority of the first half. A&C recruited well after being denied promotion at the death last season, but Marlow’s ‘team first’ mentality shone through. Marlow's new striker Callum White invested in some serious training over the summer It was telling; he slotted a corner that saw Marlow lead 2-0 at the break and then unleashed a brilliant bit of individual skill to put the reds 3-0 up before nearly tearing a hole in the net from another short corner to make it 4-0. Max Charner Davis was assured and assertive in the Marlow goal, saving a Penalty Stroke on 45 minutes but was beaten by a deflection off a team mates stick on 54 mins to see the score go to 4-1. White turned architect for Marlow’s fifth, assisting Matt Bilsland who cooly slotted to bank the 3 points, that kept MHC top of the table ahead of the trip to Newbury.
Marlow 2ndXI drew away 1-1 with Oxford 2ndXI. After a delayed start, and a reshuffled side, Marlow began the game well. Chances soon followed but the ball would not find the net. Oxford played well on the counter attack and took the lead mid way through the half. In the second period, Marlow dominated. Will Hunter, stepping into the back line at centre back, added some energy to the side and looked to press forward at every opportunity. Ollie Neal, making his debut, continually opened up the right channel with his distribution. But despite a lot of opportunities, the equaliser did not come until inside the last ten minutes. A short corner was cleared off the line but fell to Hunter who slotted home. And despite even greater pressure from Marlow in the dying minutes, a winner would not come

Ladies results

The ladies 1st team played Surbiton3 at Pound lane and were optimistic to build on the win from the previous week. The first half was very even with both sides defending successfully to ensure a goalless first half. Katie Windsor played well in defence and was crucial in securing any loose balls for Marlow however the reds were disappointed with their performance at halftime as they were unable to play the hockey they were capable of and found it difficult to string meaningful passes together.
Surbiton were the first to break the deadlock after a long ball into the circle took a few deflections and Marlow Goalkeeper Dibs Haisman could not keep the ball from the back of the net. Marlow continued to fight back with Alex Teasdale showing some great decision making in the centre of the midfield to help control the game. Two yellow cards at the same time meant Marlow were reduced to 9 towards the end of the second half but once the home side were back to a full complement, they really stepped up their gears and played their best attacking hockey in the last five minutes of the game. The home side were awarded a penalty corner in the last minute of the game and the quick reactions of Jo Cox on the post saw the reds equalise to leave the final score at 1-1.
