After 138 years, Marlow Men’s Hockey Club have finally reached a cup final – a moment of immense pride for the club, its supporters, and sponsors.
Marlow Men will contest the prestigious Tier4 Cup Final on 3 May at a packed Abingdon Stadium, marking a historic milestone in Marlow’s long and proud history.
England Hockey’s decision to introduce an end‑of‑season cup competition – inspired by the Club World Cup format – invited teams from across the Globe. It just so happened that only teams from Cherwell and Thames leagues decided to compete, something to do with global TV rights I believe.
When Keith Packer took over as chair of Marlow in 1952, his ambition was to see the men’s team reach a major final. Sadly, that dream was never realised during his tenure. More than 70 years later, that ambition has finally been fulfilled – and Mark Lowry now stands on the brink of becoming the most successful men’s cup chairman in the club’s history.
This remarkable journey has taken Marlow the length and breadth of the country, with fixtures as far afield as Yateley and beyond. Much like the FA Cup’s famous “Road to Wembley”, this competition has produced drama, grit, and unforgettable moments, well at least two. Apparently, the BBC are kicking themselves for not mirroring their ‘Road to Wembley’ Match of the Day series. Discussions are being held for next season.
The campaign began on a cold winters afternoon, and will end in the bright sunshine of Abingdon. Following promotion last season, Marlow entered the competition full of confidence, with a well‑balanced squad combining exciting young talent with proven experience (ie old) who have powered the team through each round to reach this monumental occasion.
Thanks to England Hockey adopting World Cup-style dynamic pricing, a limited number of tickets are still available. Prices range from £50 to £500, depending on final demand. Train travel is also available, with a return fare of £4,580.
Supporters are encouraged to bring family and friends, with coaches departing from Marlow. Adding to the celebrations, the Mayor has provisionally booked an open‑top bus parade through Marlow on Monday. And we have lined up Marlow’s celebrity chef to supply food.
It will be a great festival of hockey, don’t miss out
Next week, there will be a profile of the players and management
*apologies, typo error, the ticket pricing should be in the Lebanese pound, not English, LBP50 TO LBP500.
