Marlow Hockey Club Report 8th March

Women's results
The 1st team travelled to Witney and scored within the first few minutes after a great run from Martha Goodridge enabled Rachel Clarke to get on the rebound to put the Reds ahead. Witney had their own chances but the Marlow defence held strong, and Marlow went into half time 1-0 up. Witney came out fighting in the second half and equalised in the 41st minute with a goal coming from a penalty corner. Goodridge set the pace in the final 20 minutes of the game, spurring Marlow on to score again. She beat the keeper to put Marlow 2-1 up, but it was short-lived as Witney equalised moments later with a great individual run down the left side of the pitch. Marlow thought that they had clinched the game with a second goal from Clarke with three minutes to play. Unfortunately, Witney found an equalizer once again after capitalizing on a defensive error, leaving the score at 3-3.

The 2nd team maintained their slender advantage at the top of the league with a 2-0 win away at Maidenhead. On a warm day with only one substitute, the team worked tirelessly for each other creating chances and limiting opposition attacks. Olivia Letchford opened the scoring with a reverse stick deflection on the left post and Pippa Lloyd added a second from a short corner.

Men's results

The 1st team played Basingstoke away and the knowledge that a win would likely see them finish top of the league weighed too heavily.
They were 2-0 down at half-time, having missed countless chances.
The game continued in that fashion in the second half, but Marlow played with better fluidity and composure. Josh Morgans eventually scored
and Marlow kept pushing, but Basingstoke scored their third after a defensive mistake. Marlow had all the play for the final 25 minutes,
but it was still a tale of missed chances. Sam North scored from one of many penalty corners and finally, Marlow were awarded a penalty stroke,
which was saved by the man of the match, the Basingstoke goalkeeper.
On Saturday, Marlow are at home at 11.45am to Oxford OBU, knowing again that a win will see them promoted.

The second team were at home to Sonning 1sts, and for a few minutes, it seemed that they would run away with the game,
but then Sonning broke away and scored. Marlow still had attacking ambitions but could not find a way through a solid defence
After two unsuccessful penalty corner attempts, Sam Nicholson succeeded in making the scores level at half time.
Marlow continued to have more possession, but nothing they tried looked like it would bring a goal. Then Sonning were awarded a
penalty stoke which Will Hunter in goal for Marlow succeeded in pushing past the post. With time running out, Marlow were awarded
a penalty stroke, which Ollie Green put away confidently. Marlow had outrun the opposition and just about deserved their 2-1 victory.
