Marlow Hockey Club Report 5th/6th March

Men's results
Marlow men's 1st team are still unbeaten and pulled away at the top of the South Central Premier2 league with their two nearest rivals drawing with each other. Their opponents at Pound Lane were Havant2 who must have wondered what had hit them when Marlow went 2 goals up within 4 minutes, both by leading scorer Callum White, from direct and accurate passing moves into the front of goal where the ball was despatched into the goal with no fuss. After that Marlow, although still maintaining their pressure could not find a way past the visiting goalkeeper until White scored his third goal and then Lewis Goodman a few minutes before halftime, The second half started as the 1st with Lewis Goodman on hand to score from close range. The match continued in the same vein with Havant defending stoutly and their goalkeeper having a great game. White scored his fourth goal shortly followed by Chris Sewell with an amazing shot from a narrow-angle to round off a 7-0 victory. Callum White has now scored 29 goals this season.

Ladies Results
The Ladies 1st team were away to Fareham and won 2-0. They started brilliantly and good pace from the Marlow midfield led to Kerri Smith’s deflection at a penalty corner hitting a body on the line resulting in a penalty stroke. Kiera Foster dispatched this calmly to give the Reds a lead in the first four minutes. Marlow’s press continued to give the home side problems and some great attacking play gave player of the match Emily Miskell a chance to double the score, which she did - beating the keeper with a well-placed shot.
Fareham did have some good chances but the Marlow defence held strong. Marlow were patient, with plenty of movement but were unable to score any further goals. Notable performances came from Rachel Goodwin who showed enormous strength on the ball; Zoe Clarke who controlled the centre midfield; Katy Windsor who won countless balls and showed her skill to good effect and Mabel Daw and Lauren Martin for showing confidence in their debuts for the 1s.
The Ladies' 2nd team played at Newbury and Thatcham looking for a win to prolong their place at the top of the league for another week. Goal number one came quickly after a flowing team move allowed perfectly placed Estelle Palmer to tap in at the back post. The second and third goals followed quickly but Marlow did not have it all their own way, Newbury and Thatcham came back into the game but went into halftime with nothing to show for it. Marlow regrouped at halftime and put away three more goals in the second half, whilst the best defence in the league kept a clean sheet. Estelle Palmer and Eva Barnett left the field with 2 goals apiece, Eleanor Sharp added a goal with another well placed tap in and Emily Gillespie completed the scoring. Marlow's attention now moves to the last 4 games of the season, as they aim to retain the top spot in the league to ensure promotion.
