Marlow Hockey Club Report 4th/5th October

MARLOW HOCKEY CLUB MEN GET OFF THE MARK IN THE ENGLAND HOCKEY LEAGUE

Marlow Men’s first team took the long trip to Exeter University on Sunday, and returned with all three points, their first win of the season, and the first since they were promoted last season to the England Hockey League. Jayden Zamler opened the scoring from open play, and doubled Marlow’s lead just before the end of the first quarter. Exeter pulled one back before half time, before a Tom McKinlay penalty corner restored Marlow’s two goal advantage in the third quarter. Zamler completed his hat-trick early in the final quarter, and whilst two very late goals for the students gave respectability to the final scoreline, Marlow’s win was more comfortable than a 4-3 score suggests.

The weekend was less happy for Marlow Women’s first team, who returned from Cerdiff with a chastening defeat in their own England Hockey League fixture. After going one down early on, Marlow had chances to equalise, with Alice Godfrey hitting the post. Cardiff scored a second before half time, but after the break Marlow brought the score back to 2-1 with a brilliant piece of individual skill from Helena Sykora. Pressing for an equaliser, Marlow were caught twice on the break leaving them 4-1 down, after which Cardiff turned the screw with three further goals which left the final scoreline as 7-1. Marlow will look to bounce back this weekend with a home fixture against Exeter, while the Men face another long away trip to table-topping Chichester.

With both first teams away, the second teams took centre stage at Pound Lane, the Women winning 3-0 against Chichester, and the Men edging a local derby against Sonning’s first team, winning 3-2.
