Marlow Hockey Club Report 28th September

Women's results

Marlow travelled to Southampton to play Trojans 1s in the Conference West. Marlow started well and dominated possession in the first half of the game. They linked well and earned numerous penalty corners but were unable to capitalise on their attacks, with one shot being saved off the line by the Trojans' defence. Trojans came back stronger in the second half and had better chances. Both teams were undisciplined in the closely fought match resulting in cards for both teams. Indianna Gomersall showed her grit and determination when playing against her former club, earning her player of the match. Trojans earned a penalty stroke in the final quarter of the game which their experienced captain slotted past Marlow keeper Alys Ramm. The final whistle blew in which the home side took all three points in a very tight match.

Men's Results

The men's 1sts had a frustrating day at Slough and had to show some grit and character to come away with all 3 points.
Slough caused Marlow some problems in the first half but it never led to any threat on Marlow’s goal. That said the visitors only had one clear-cut chance in the first period after Henry May was brilliantly creative to make space to shoot but then couldn’t execute the finish. It was 0-0 at halftime and Slough came out full of confidence and optimism.
On 44mins Dave Harding picked up the ball just inside his own 25 and produced some outstanding give-and-go hockey which saw him score 4 passes later at the other end. Marlow looked frustrated as Slough were able to stop them from playing their usual free-flowing game and that’s how the game finished, 1-0.
Marlow sit top of the table and host Oxford University next week at 11:45. The students are also on 6 points in 4th place.
The 2nd team were at home with a team largely consisting of young players playing together for the first time and were up against a strong experienced side from Fareham.
Throughout the game, Marlow had a fair share of possession but Fareham were too strong in defence and took their chances well when they attacked on the break. Fareham deserved their 5-0 win. But for heroics by Ivor Crampsie in the Marlow goal, they could well have scored more.
