Marlow Hockey Club Report 27th September

Men's matches

Marlow men's 1st team were at home on Sunday to Clifton Robinson from Bristol, another strong and well-organised team.
Marlow had their share of possession from the start, but the visitors scored after about six minutes through an expertly taken penalty corner and a defensive lapse led to another goal shortly after that.
Marlow attacked with purpose, but Clifton Robinson's defence was strong and backed up by some excellent saves by their goalkeeper. The second half was much the same, and Marlow conceded another goal three minutes into the second half. That triggered more effort
from Marlow with good control in midfield, but leading to nothing in front of goal, and several penalty corners came to nothing. Their hard running paid off in the end after a mazy run towards the goal by Theo Seymour, the youngest member of the team. The ball looped up off the goalkeeper, and Theo, following up his run, was in the right place to put the ball into the net.
Urged on by the crowd, Marlow pressed hard with time running out, but a breakaway led to a penalty corner to the visitors in added time and a 4th goal, which hardly reflected the overall run of play.
Marlow have a long journey to Exeter University next Sunday.

Women's matches

Marlow women’s 1s hosted Clifton Robinsons 2s at Pound Lane on Saturday. Marlow started strongly, pressing the Clifton defence and earning a penalty corner in the opening minutes which Clifton defended well. Lena Sykora continued to press the visitors’ defence and made several successful interceptions, keeping the pressure on Clifton. Clifton came back into the game and warned their own penalty corners, which Marlow keeper Alys Ramm dealt with effectively. Clifton capitalised on a Marlow defensive error in the 12th minute with a shot Ramm could not stop, taking the lead. The game continued to remain open in the first half with both teams vying for possession in the midfield. Clifton opened the second half with two successive penalty corners of their own, which the Marlow defence kept out to keep the deficit to one goal. Some great attacking play from Marlow captain Lana Wallis kept the Reds on the game, hunting for an equaliser, but unfortunately, nothing came of it, and the score remained 1-0 to Clifton at the final whistle.
