Marlow Hockey Club Report 26th/27th February

The Men's 1st team were away to Eastcote. After the torrential rain and wind at Fareham last week it was ideal conditions for hockey. However, Marlow struggled to play their usual flowing game. The pitch wasn’t helping the ball to move freely and Eastcote were also causing them problems whenever they had the ball. The hosts took the lead after 20mins, carving through the centre of the Marlow defence. Within 5 minutes Marlow we’re back level thanks to a good finish from Chris Sewell and that’s how it stayed until halftime. During the break, Marlow recognised that this wasn’t the day for pretty hockey, but that grit and desire were essentials if they wanted to come away with all three points. They were so much better in the second half and even looked in control out of possession. On 45 mins Sewell bagged another to give Marlow a 2-1 lead and then on 63 mins Ben Lazarevic chipped in with a sublime assist for Lewis Goodman to get on the score sheet. Sewell finished the scoring with 5 minutes to go, sealing his 2nd hatrick in 7 days and another 4-1 win to Marlow that keeps them top of the table.

The 2nd team were at home to Staines2 who are top of the league and tough opponents as expected. With players stranded in France, and others injured, the squad was the smallest deployed this season. Nonetheless, with Sam Burroughs making his 2s debut, and Chris Jackson returning, the group showed no fear. The first half saw Marlow gradually gain the upper hand and in the second half, their confidence grew. Tom O’Docherty opened the scoring from a yard out, finishing a well-worked team counterattack. Staines looked to build pressure but the more they pushed the more dangerous Marlow looked on the counter and the Marlow defence was in no mood to give an inch. Burroughs was outstanding in defence while the youngest player in the side, Matty Gillespie, shone and was a constant thorn in the Staines side. A second goal came from Burroughs, tucking away a short corner on the reverse. Further chances came but the score stayed at 2-0 and probably the team's most complete performance of the season.
