Marlow Hockey Club Report 22nd January

All 14 Marlow teams played on Saturday and both the Men's and Ladies first teams won at home to maintain their places towards the top of their leagues

The men's visitor Oxford University2 put up a good fight were fit and well organised and made it difficult for Marlow to turn their possession into goals.
Callum White put Marlow ahead in the first half and further goals seemed inevitable but did not come. The squad reacted well to some tactical changes but
still found goals elusive. In defence, Sam Burroughs and skipper Sam North were outstanding in dealing with any goal threats. Marlow scored again through Callum White his 15th of the season when he took advantage of a goalkeeping error.
It was not a game for the purists but good to see Marlow win a close fought game with something to spare.

The Men's 2nd team were away to Oxford 2s looking to extend their three-game unbeaten run. A strong start saw them press high and put the hosts under pressure. Dan Field opened the scoring, intercepting an Oxford cross goal pass and deflecting it into the net. Oxford pegged the visitors back but Marlow led again through John Butt from a penalty corner with Mav Girn providing the assist.
As the half progressed Oxford picked up creating a number of penetrating counter attacks. These led to two goals giving the hosts a 3-2 halftime lead.
The second half was a tight affair. Marlow created various opportunities but could not quite get the ball in the net. Final score 3-2 to Oxford.

3rd team beat Milton Keynes3 7-0,
Marlow 4 beat Marlow 5 4-0.
6th team lost 1-0 away to Staines4,

Ladies Results:-

Marlow 1st team welcomed Havant to Pound Lane and made a strong start. The pace of the midfield and forwards gave the home side numerous chances but the Havant keeper kept the ball out of the net. The deadlock broke after 26 minutes when Kiera Allen’s saved shot landed nicely for Victoria Allen who finally managed to beat the visiting keeper. Havant were dangerous on the break and the defence had to be quick to react to ensure that Marlow remained ahead. Marlow continued to dominate possession with Kesia Richardson outstanding. Ten minutes into the second half, a clever interplay between Katy Windsor, Martha Goodridge and Kiera Foster at the back post made the score 2-0. Havant continued to fight back passing the ball well, exploiting gaps and scoring to make the final score 2-1.
The ladies 2nds did well playing Wallingford 1 away, winning 2-0 with the goals scored by Helena Sykora and Colette Fitzpatrick. They stay top of the league but Oxford University2 in second place have played one game less
