Marlow Hockey Club Report 12th/13th February

Mens results
Marlow men's 1st team are becoming a hard, maturing and uncompromising team. The standard of hockey they are producing gets better every week and keeps on improving. The away game against Basingstoke was a chance to put a dent in the host's promotion hopes and put a gap between the two teams as they are one of Marlow’s closest rivals this season. Sam Burroughs opened the scoring from a corner and Lewis Goodman finished a good variation from another just after 15mins in. The hosts drew one back just before halftime and came out for the second half fired up and looking as though they could get back into the game. Marlow dug deep and rode out some dominant spells by Basingstoke. Man of the match, Burroughs was an absolute rock at the back, having undeniably his best game of the season. Every time they looked like they were breaking forward he positioned himself superbly to thwart their attacks. With 15 mins to go Goodman finished a sublime flowing move to put the visitors 3-1 ahead and Burroughs made it 4-1 on 68 mins from another corner. The hat trick wasn’t to be for Burroughs when he hit the bar at an overtime corner, but Marlow got the win they were looking for to move back into the promotion spots for the first time in 2022. Marlow play their game in hand away at Fareham next week and a win would see them go top.

Marlow 2nds hosted Banbury2. With the two sides separated by just two points at the start of the game, it looked set to be a close affair. Marlow began the game well, and took the lead through John Butt from a well-worked short corner. But Banbury struck back through a short corner of their own. The score was 1-1 at halftime. Marlow moved ahead via a penalty stroke from Mav Girn, who’s initial shot was blocked by a Banbury player's body in front of goal. They followed up with another short corner from David Hand to make it 3-1. Banbury were not finished though and got a goal back to 3-2 with 15 mins on the clock. Both sides had chances in the final minutes but Marlow’s defence held tight to secure the points.

Ladies results

Marlow Ladies 1st XI travelled to Amersham & Chalfont for their morning fixture. Marlow had an early penalty corner which they failed by slim margins to convert followed soon after by a second corner which rattled the uprights. A&C had a breakaway and scored followed by a second 10 minutes later. The Marlow side became a tighter unit for the last 10 minutes of the first half and Kiera Allen hit the ball in the air giving the A&C keeper no chance to pull one back. The second half started much the same as the first with the match being played in the centre of the pitch, A&C scored their 3rd goal where Marlow could have been marking tighter. Rachel Goodwin used her strength and speed to pull Marlow back to 3-2 which is how the match finished. Marlow remain in 3rd position and will look to their next fixture at home to Bournemouth in 2 weeks time for some more points.

Marlow Ladies 2nd XI hosted Phoenix & Ranalagh 1st Xi looking to put behind the loss last weekend. Marlow started strongly and were rewarded with a goal from Eva Barnett. Chances for both sides followed but it was Marlow and Eva again who made the score 2-0 at halftime. The second half was well fought by both sides but the Marlow defence held strong to keep a clean sheet and with the final seconds of the match being played with a penalty corner, Marlow’s captain Milly Conibear expertly tapped the ball over the line to make the final score 3-0. Marlow remain top of their league with promotion still in sight.
