A thrilling top of the table clash...

With the sun shining and the rain looking set to stay away, The Mighty Marlow Ladies 1s took on league leaders and current goal scoring machine (having already amassed 28 goals across 6 games) Guildford 1s.
A minute silence ahead of the game marked Armistice Day and 100 years since the end of WW1 before we took to the field, keen to put a good week’s training into practice. A slightly nervy start saw us pushed back by Guildford, but with no lack of confidence or belief we built up possession and exerted our own pressure back. After 5 minutes we took our reward…a pass across the circle by Sarah with pinpoint accuracy for Kerri to deflect into the bottom right…1-0 Marlow!
With Guildford rattled they came out strong from the push back. After some frantic defending Guildford took the opportunity on their own deflection attempt...1-1…Another push back and another wave of Guildford attack won them a penalty corner 2 minutes later…2-1 Guildford.
Undeterred we regrouped and started to play with more discipline and composure, showing we weren’t going without a fight. Amelia was unlucky with an attempt that hit the post before on 29 minutes Kerri scored her 2nd of the game taking us all-square into half time.
Having not found themselves in this position yet this season, Guildford had the better start to the 2nd half causing us difficulties with a high and aggressive press. We defended well as a team and attacking opportunities started to build. On 45 minutes the deadlock was broken with Sarah getting on the scoresheet…3-2 Marlow! It looked like the game was destined to be a draw when 7 minutes later Guildford levelled once again.
In a moment of confusion on whether we were playing hockey or golf, Nat took out the 7 iron to clear the ball up the pitch…well it certainly cleared something, or rather someone. A chance to huddle together…we knew the game was there for the taking. An awesome 6-minute spell from Smithy saw her score 2 goals on 54 and 60 minutes…Final score…5-3 Marlow!
MOM – Smithy
DOD - Nat
