15 very excited Marlow players stepped out on a very wet and rainy day on their home ground to play Woking in the Over 45’s Cup.

Team tactics discussed prior to the game: Who has the most injuries, who can last a whole game and will the Chili be ready for after the game……?!!

The game set off at pace, with Marlow putting pressure on the Woking defence. Lucy and Liz driving through the midfield and sending balls out to the forwards. Woking defence was solid and intercepted well potential balls coming though. Woking attacked back but excellent defending by Brigitte and Claire prevented them. Anita and Sue pushed forward sending the ball back into Woking circle, Jane and Jo were unlucky not to convert several attacks on goal. Woking fought back sending the ball back down to Marlow’s goal, Mac did some impressive saves but was unable to prevent Woking scoring from a penalty corner.

The second half continued the fast moving pace of the first half. Margot on the right held firm giving excellent passes to Ruth to take up the right. Alex and Amanda moved well creating opportunities for the midfield to drive into the circle for the chances on goal. The game continued end to end, Marlow being awarded short corners but unable to succeed. Kate and Anna moved constantly to create spaces and take advantages of any opportunities in their grasp. The last minute of the game, Marlow were heavily attacking, with all of the team pressurising the Woking goal. A break away ball sent the Woking attack flying down the pitch with the Marlow defence following in hot pursuit, solitary goalie Mac made a gallant attempt to thwart the attack but sadly the game finished 2-0.

Marlow Over 45’s debut as a team was impressive start, all players enjoying the competition and opportunity to play great hockey. Lucy Godfrey got player of the match for an outstanding performance, Brigitte Hamelink and Helen MacFarlane also received votes for fantastic play.

The Marlow ‘Mid-lifers’ now go forward to the Over 45’s Plate competition.
