Marlow GU16A vs Hampstead and Westminster GU16A Venue – the expensive Redgrave Centre

The warm autumn sunshine welcomed both teams to Marlow’s most expensive 4th choice of location, with warning of parking chaos it turned out there was time to watch the boys smash Reading 8-0 and lots of time for team chat, I’m sure mostly about Tilly’s nose injury or who shops at Space NK on the High Street perhaps. So, back to the game!
The U16 girls are starting to bond as a team, last match a close loss to A&C 3-2 as all the GCSE parents filled the balcony in a small paparazzi making sure every moment was captured. Today Kate had found the spare tripod for the VEO camera that was left somewhere at Bisham by men’s 1’s, I am sure Kevin Chappell would be responsible as he would always run off with the fines money in our men’s 1st team days.
Starting with a 4-3-3 formation Marlow passed the 2 minute mark of conceding, the usual bet with previous U14 coach Kilminster, watching reporter, and parents that a soft goal in the first minutes would actually wake the team up and stop being so welcoming to the oppo. This saw Marlow create several chances, but after 12 minutes Marlow let H&W walk into the circle, get a yard from goal and have a tap in. Wake up time!
An end to end 1st half saw Marlow get into the game, chances at each end and both goalies were tested without the ball crossing the line, although the side line was tested by both umpires including an incident with the football goalposts that could have ended with an umpire concussion replacement.
Into the second half. Marlow dominated for 5 minutes and Fuggle was there to slot in a great passing move to equalize, the celebrations lasted 3 minutes until H&W found space in the circle to draw in 3 home team defenders, pass from the baseline across the goal and tap in from close range. There were complaints to umpire Graeme there was a foot involved but not loud enough to the decision to be overturned. Something to be watched back on the VEO footage.
20 minutes to go, it was all Marlow. Chance after chance, great press on the H&W defense and all eyes were on their goal. The final pass just went missing and shots were straight at the keeper when the goal was an easy target. Eden drove through the defense and seemed like a new player, it was like Zinny had turned up to watch the game! Finally, 2-2, Fuggle waltzed round the defense and around the keeper twice to claim a brace.
Finally the bright sunny morning was over as the clouds rolled in, Marlow continued to press but left the back door open and nearly let H&W pinch the game with 10 seconds left, a scramble cleared with a clear 1 on 2 chance.
Star player – Fran
Donkey of the day – the concussed umpire
Special mention – Hannah King, injured in warm up, hopefully ice pack and hot chocolate fix
